This year, the students have been spending a lot of time learning about watercolour techniques and oil pastel techniques. We decided to take our most favourite pieces and choose our own calendar art this year. Here are our creations.

Matariki
Matariki Celebrations this week!
Students put their maths skills to work and learned how to make 8-Pointed Stars using a compass and a ruler.
We also taught the senior students in Mr. McDonald's class how to make 8-pointed stars! It was great to see the middle pod students' confidence and excitement sharing what they had learned as these were really challenging.
We also did some fun glitter painting of stars.
During Exploration workshops, children learned about Post and Lintel architecture and had a limited time and resource challenge to design a Lego post and lintel that could hold the weight of one student. Here is a student testing out their structure.

We've been busy in Kapowai Pod. We had a lot of fun using the apps Brain VR and Quivervision to explore augmented reality during our exploration workshops. If you want to explore this at home with a smart phone or tablet, check out this video about Quivervision.

Our new Maths game!
Today, we played a fun new math game where you have to roll a dice, add its sum and draw line rays (two end points) based on the sum. The objective is to try and meet your end point to another player's endpoint to score a point! We practiced ruler work, measurement, addition and team communication.

We are under way for 2019!
Rūma Wha is settling in well and getting to know one another. Exploration Space, Workshops, Growth Mindset and Art are some of the themes we've been exploring in the Kapowai Pod (dragonflies).

The finished product! This is just outside our door! You might want to come and see it before the rain or feet take it away! The children were so proud of their work!
Here is our water colour dragon fly art! Students were only given three primary water colours and learned to mix colours to get the secondary colours.

We learned how to take an image, add some other images and snap a grid line on it to scale and enlarge. Here we used our school spirits and some characters from eeny meeny nz (stationary supplier) to enter a chalk mural contest so we can earn some more art for our classes!
